ADHD Related Depression
ADHD Related Depression
People with ADHD are more likely to struggle with depression, often without realizing the two are connected (Rigglin et al., 2021). In reality, it's often what happens when your brain has to work harder than most just to do everyday things, and that adds up over time.
Something that separates ADHD-related depression from depression on its own is that it often improves noticeably once ADHD itself is addressed because a lot of the low mood is from unmanaged symptoms rather than a separate, standalone depression. When ADHD symptoms are better managed, this kind of depression often lifts too. Counseling has been shown to be effective in managing ADHD (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

- Harsh self-talk about being lazy, broken, or a disappointment
- Withdrawing from people because keeping up feels impossible
- Starting things with energy and crashing days later
