ADHD Related Addiction

People with ADHD are more likely to struggle with alcohol, weed, scrolling, pornography, etc. These behaviors can become a way of coping with an overstimulated, understimulated, or exhausted brain, and they can quietly turn into patterns that are hard to break.

Oftentimes, we believe it's a matter of discipline or willpower. But for ADHD brains, it's rarely that simple. These behaviors are often the fastest, most reliable way to get the dopamine hit our brain is chronically low on. This can quickly cause a cycle of temporary relief followed by shame, which now creates even more discomfort than it was trying to escape.

What this can look like

  • Doom scrolling even though there is a voice in your head telling you to stop
  • Relying on a vice to focus, sleep, or get through the day.
  • Convincing yourself that it's okay at first, and then feeling guilty later.
  • Using it to escape a mental noise that never seems to turn off
  • Promising to cut back or stop several times, only to find yourself back where you started.
