ADHD Related Burnout
Burnout related to ADHD
Those with ADHD are more likely to struggle with perfectionism and burnout. This can look like large bursts of energy and focus on one thing, which is later followed by exhaustion and burnout. Sometimes, we engage in a chase for "perfectionism" to try and ease feelings of shame or doubt.
Have you ever failed a test or gotten feedback at work and then shortly after felt like you had to be flawless from then on just to make up for it? You're not alone, this may be more common than you think.
The good news is, working with a counselor can help you make the small changes that add up to large results over time. Breaking this cycle isn't easy, but counseling can help establish a sense of accountability, consistency, and feedback.
What this can look like
- Overcommitting until you realize you don't have enough time or energy left to give
- Hyperfixation on one thing at the expense of everything else
- Procrastinating three works and then doing all of it in three days
- Crashing hard after finally finishing something, with nothing left to give
- Resentment toward work you used to care about
